Ann Arbor Rock-n-Roll Revival 2009...

Al and Chris

Chris Taylor has made his Rock-n-Roll dreams come true time and time again. Back in 2000, he emailed one of his favorite guitarists, Deniz Tek, out of the blue and asked him if he wanted to play a rock show. Surprisingly, Tek said sure, when and where?

I wish I could have seen Chris' face when he got that response, because so many people whom either Chris or myself have asked to play want way too much money just to leave the house! Not Deniz Tek, though. He is ready to catch the next flight to Detroit whenever he gets the chance. That guy lives to play his Epiphone guitar he bought from the late great Fred “Sonic" Smith.

Dennis Machinegun Thompson and Kimmer (Louder Than Love Set)

Fast forward to 2009 when Chris and I met Kim Maki the blogger/promoter Retro: Kimmer and one of her good friends and client, drummer, writer lecturer, Dennis"Machinegun"Thompson.

Then one day, Chris and I were talking over a smoke...What if we could put Deniz Tek and Machinegun on the same stage again and call it a “Rock-n-Roll Revival Meeting”? So that’s exactly what we did, got in touch with Deniz Tek, and then he lined up his great friend Machinegun and away we went booking the bands and venue. Kimmer jumped in to help promote the event.

The Blind Pig

Mazinga

The Blind Pig was chosen as the venue for the Revival. We put our band Mazinga on the bill not only because we fit musically, but in all the years Chris has known Tek, Mazinga has never been on the same bill.

Nikki Corvette said she would be honored to be on the bill and would play for free (now how non rockstar is that???) so I made a call and Gorevette's on the bill. At this point, I’m getting busier and busier since I play drums for both Mazinga and Gorevette.

Unfortunately, Machinegun had to drop out of the gig Stanley T. Madhatter filled in at the last minute. You know what they say, "the show must go on” so I got a jingle from Chris asking if I would play drums in Machinegun’s place. Those are big shoes to fill but I’m never afraid of a challenge so of course I agreed to play!

I wasn’t too worried since the set list consisted of Radio Birdman and Sonic's Rendevous songs that I’ve been playing for years with both Scott Morgan and Deniz Tek. Deniz flew in, we all practiced and everything just came together.

The night of the show I was excited to see the Blind Pig filling up early. By 10:30 the place was packed and Mazinga took the stage. We blasted through originals such as “Johnny Was a Robot” “Open the Blast Doors”, “547” and closed the set with the MC5’s “Lookin’ at You”.

The ladies of Gorevette and I took the stage and played everything off our debut record (due out 1-26-10) as well as some kick ass numbers from Nikki Corvette’s arsenal of songs. Next, Scott Morgan and the Rationals played soul tunes that are sure to make anyone feel the groove. I got a little break to catch my breath from drumming in the first 2 bands while the Rationals played.

The final act was a collaboration of songs that were organically grown right here in our backyard. Performed by Deniz Tek(Radio Birdman), Hiawatha (Cult Heroes), Rob King(Destroy All Monsters), Eric Pouille(Holy Curse), Scott Morgan, Chris Taylor and myself. Here is a copy of the set list.

Over all, it was a great night spent with fellow friends of Rock-n-Roll. It was my honor and pleasure to play drums with all the outstanding musicians who participated in the Ann Arbor Rock-n-Roll Revival Meeting. Looking forward to the next meeting.

Good Times

AL KING HERE

Al King here. I play drums, live for Rock n Roll, go on adventures and meet cool and interesting people along the way. I’ll tell ya, show ya and influence ya here. As of today Jan. 11 2010, I’m working hard promoting Gorevette's debut record release titled "The Lustfully Yours EP". Gorevette is one of the bands I play drums in.

Started in 2009, Gorevette includes the fabulous Nikki Corvette on lead vocals, Amy and Lianna Gore from Detroit's sensational rock outfit and internationally known Gore Gore Girls, "The Sisters Falcon"; Amy on lead guitar and Lianna down low with the bass. Both girls on Gretch white n gold Falcons.

I’ve also played drums with Michigan rock legends such as Scott Morgan, Mitch Ryder, Deniz Tek (of Radio Birdman).

I currently drum with Gorevette, Powertrane, and Mazinga just to mention a few…

Powertrane

Stay tuned here for more. Over and out.

Gorevette To Release The Lustfully Yours EP On January 26, 2010

Some things are just meant to be. When the legendary Nikki Corvette arrived with equally revered rock critic Robert Matheu at a Gore Gore Girls show in Los Angeles, he instinctively knew that she and bandleader Amy Gore would be natural compatriots. Both women have toured the world, rejecting trends and gimmickry to play the authentic, powerful rock n' roll they've made their religion. They became friends that night, not industry associates but real pals. When Corvette relocated to her native Detroit for family reasons, she and Gore began to spend time together, spending hours talking about music while hanging out by the record player.

With members of each woman's bands in different cities, they originally conceived the idea of doing a punk cover band, playing their favorite songs from bands like the Buzzcocks and the Damned.

That soon changed when Nikki brought her tune 'Lustfully Yours' to the table. Amy Gore, a formidable guitarist and writer, began writing songs specifically for Nikki that carry on the ‘Shangri-Las meets Ramones' v sound she is famous for while incorporating lyrics rejecting the artificiality of current feminine ideals ('Fake It') and making stand for the hedonistic fun of dancing, cars and staying up all night. 'Rock n' roll, above all else, should be fun,' said Gore.

Enlisting Lianna Castillo (bassist from the Gore Gore Girls) and Al King (Powertrane) on drums, the line-up was compled, and Gorevette began playing festivals and club shows. When it came time to record their EP, they split time between both Jim Diamond's Ghetto Recordings in Detroit and Rock City Studios in Ann Arbor, MI, Gore producing and the songs. Gorevette were honored to have Radio Birdman guitarist Deniz Tek playing lead guitar on 'Nothin's Gonna Stop Me' and trading licks with Amy Gore on 'Brand New Lover'.

The new tracks are compiled for The Lustfully Yours EP, available Tuesday, January 26, 2010 on itunes USA and Internationally, Rhapsody, Napster, eMusic, IMVU, LimeWire Store, Amazon MP3 & Amazon on Demand.

The video for 'Lustfully Yours' has just been unveiled as well! Watch it HERE:

About Nikki: 1978 saw the birth of Nikki Corvette's career with the release of the Nikki Corvette and the Convertibles single "Young and Crazy" b/w "Backseat Love" and "Criminal Element". This was all happening in Detroit during the punk rock explosion where Nikki would see herself sharing the stage with The Ramones, Johnny Thunders, The Romantics and many more.

By 1980 the band name was changed to Nikki and the Corvettes. They would release their legendary debut album on BOMP! Records, an incredible mixture of 60's style girl group vocals, twangy guitars and teenage pop with plenty of punk rock attitude, with songs about cruisin for boys and fun in the sun. The album and band would influence everyone from The Go-go's (to go for more of a "pop" sound) all the way to The Donnas (see the lyric "I wanna be like Nikki Corvette" from Gimmie My Radio), and around the world to Japan with The 5678's.

About Amy Gore: Amy was born in Detroit, Michigan and in 1997 she founded the Gore Gore Girls, the first of few all-female bands of the garage rock genre. Along with other bands such as The White Stripes, The Dirtbombs, The Detroit Cobras and others, the Gore Gore

Girls helped establish the modern American garage rock scene of the 1990s in Detroit. Gore's talents are myriad: she is a ferocious guitarist who has helped bring Gretsch hollowbody guitars their due, a songwriter who distills the perfect pop gem and a studio pro whose unerring ear brought Gorevette to light.
